Chapter 5. Expanding the potential for Russian-American accommodation and cooperation
Article Abstract:
It is likely that relations between the US and Russia will become increasingly strained as the US moves closer to decisions on national missile defense deployment, or possibly the use of advanced theater missile defense systems. It may prove possible to create the necessary conditions for wide-reaching strategic cooperation only by amending the political and psychological climate of bilateral relations. It is likely to take a very long time to create the basis for true strategic cooperation, but it is vital to seek mutual agreement on missile defense and the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty if US-Russian relations are not to worsen.

The Chechen crisis and the future of Russia
Article Abstract:
The Chechen situation in important to the evolution of the Russian Federation as an independent coalition because it pertains to the national existence issue. The solution of the crisis, which might have been caused by Russia's impulsive and opportunistic decisions and the meddling of self-serving internal and external groups, will prevent the possible deterioration of Russia's foundation and the resultant effects on the balance of power between the federation and its member republics.

The success of oil exploration and development in the Caspian-Caucasian region of the former Soviet Union depends upon the cooperation of countries directly and indirectly involved with Caspian crude oil transport.
