China, Japan and the scramble for Siberia

Article Abstract:

Russia's profile in the region would rise significantly with the tapping of Siberia's massive energy wealth, both oil and natural gas and the final orientation of the associated energy transport infrastructure, either towards China or Japan might play a decisive role in the evolving balance of power in East Asia. A trilateral Russia-Japan-US summit devoted exclusively to the issue of tangible progress of the Northern Territories can profoundly influence the vital and still undecided problem of the Siberian pipeline's final route.
