Crossing borders: Development, learning and the North-South divide
Article Abstract:
A study draws on a range of perspectives, from development and postcolonial scholarship, in order to argue for the creative possibility of learning between different contexts. The study comprises a conceptualization of learning that is at once ethical and indirect, ethical since it transcends a liberal integration of subaltern knowledge, and indirect since it transcends a rationalist tendency to limit learning to direct knowledge transfer between places perceived as "similar."

Redirecting the revolution? The USA and the failure of nation-building in South Vietnam
Article Abstract:
The ideology and practice of the USA's nation-building campaign in South Vietnam in 1960s is examined. It also reflects on the reason why, despite growing evidence of policy failure, US officials continued to promote a strategy that ignored Vietnamese history, the degree to which US assumptions about the basic malleability of the Vietnamese and their institutions have found echoes in the US attempts to reconstruct Afghanistan and Iraq.
