Early 1999 natural catastrophes caused widespread famine in North Korea, yet humanitarian aid became subject to the political agendas of North Korea, the US, and its allies. Political policy and argument interlocked with human suffering to direct attention away from humanitarian considerations.

Various Caribbean and other offshore finance centers known for their money laundering activities are under international review. The Organization for Economic Development and others are forming policy regarding the secrecy, regulatory, and political spaces of these centers.
