Labour's Strategic Defence Review
Article Abstract:
The UK's Labour government aims to establish a long-term defence programme for the period to 2015 through its Strategic Defence Review (SDR). However, a number of questions can be raised about the SDR, including whether it is as innovative as Defence Secretary George Robertson has stated and whether it has been motivated by a desire to reduce the defence budget. The SDR represents a new departure in that it is a detailed and wide-reaching formal review, an approach avoided by the previous Conservative administration. It has also addressed the need to improve support services and to establish a more effective force projection capability.

A question of defense: How American allies are responding to the US Missile Defense Program
Article Abstract:
An attempt is made to explore how Canada and the United Kingdom have approached the issue of missile defense, and in particular how they have responded to the US offer to formally participate in the program. It is observed that the two countries have resisted making specific commitments because of political considerations even though both have moved progressively closer to formal participation.
