Mystifying China
Article Abstract:
Western countries have long faced difficulties in their relations with China, and Christopher Patten decided to treat China as though it were like any other country. Patten's legacy can be seen in Hong Kong after the handover to China. He notes that trade with China has tended not to be affected by political developments in French and British relations with China. A number of arguments have been used to justify appeasement of China. A special characteristic of China is a push toward modernization coupled with a world view that is self-centered, but China is gradually moving toward acceptance of global norms.

Israel's military transfers to China and Taiwan
Article Abstract:
Israeli military-technology transfers to China have elicited a lot of confusion and speculation since about 1977. The federal government's recent accusations of illegal Israeli transfers of US technologies appear to reflect altered political considerations rather than actual facts because the nation tacitly supported Israeli military sales to Taiwan in the 1970s and to China in the 1980s. Israel's military-technology transfers to both Asian nations are evaluated.
