Negotiating the peace in Northern Ireland
Article Abstract:
The ceasefire agreed to by the Irish Republican Army and the Joint Declaration signed by the British and Irish governments in Dec. 1993 paved the way for the establishment of peace in Northern Ireland. The British government has officially stated that Northern Ireland can now seek self-autonomy. The Framework Document signed by both governments on Feb. 22, 1995 allows for the creation of a new legislative assembly and abolishes British claims over Northern Ireland. It also provides for the people of Northern Ireland to seek independence through a referendum.
