Why is there a Biodiversity Convention? The international interest in centralized development planning
Article Abstract:
The passage of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is a recognition of the need for a global perspective that highlights the importance of sustainable national land-use policies. While the resources protected by the CBD are domestic terrestrial species, ranging from medicinal plants to endangered animals, intervention is needed to persuade countries of the need to monitor such issues as the illicit trade in endangered animals and the management of agricultural gene banks. The CBD is also useful because it helps clarify funding mechanisms that can be accessed by poorer countries.

The WTO in crisis: Lessons learned from the Doha negotiations on the environment
Article Abstract:
The Doha Round of international trade talks in the World Trade Organization (WTO), which were suspended in July 2006, made little progress in the negotiations on the relationship between WTO rules and multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs), both inside and outside the WTO. A discussion on some of the options for governments to clarify this relationship includes the nature and experience of the relationship together with a description of the ways in which countries in the WTO and in the UN system could work toward better global governance of trade and sustainable development.
