Article Abstract:
The diversionary theory is tested by broadening its spatial and temporal domain by examining the seven major powers of Renaissance Italy, using the directed-dyad research design, which allows for a more rigorous testing of the diversionary hypotheses and regime change that is used as a test of diversionary theory. It is seen that oligarchies are more likely to initiate wars during periods of domestic unrest than republics.
