Regulating biotech trade: the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety

Article Abstract:

An overview is presented on the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, an environment and public health policy that permits nations to refuse imports of organisms altered by biotechnology. While the policy acknowledges the risk that genetically modified goods present, unresolved legal issues include liability, labeling regulations and power relations between biosafety entities and international trade organizations.

Businesses, green groups and the media: the role of non-governmental organizations in the climate change debate

The failure of the Sixth Conference of the Parties and the Kyoto Protocol and its impact on non-governmental organizations, such as businesses, environmental groups, and the media is examined. The author maintains the climate change debate has created an environmental awareness among non-environmental groups, which has put pressure on the negotiating process.
