Strained alliance: US-Japan diplomacy in the Asian financial crisis
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the dynamics of the relationship between the US and Japan during the Asian financial crisis indicates that these two countries still have conflicting views about global responsibility, leadership and burden-sharing. The absence of clearly defined long-term goal for the alliance between Japan and the US plays a significant part in tension between the two countries. The Japanese government is growing very sensitive to indications of a declining US commitment, possibly because it recognizes that the aim of the alliance is no longer as clear as it used to be.

The United States and theatre missile defence in North-east Asia
Article Abstract:
Regional security in North-east Asia would be enhanced by theatre-missile-defence (TMD) cooperation between the US, South Korea and Japan. The importance of TMD deployment facilities in the region increased substantially in 1997, with China becoming increasingly assertive while North Korea is maintaining its missile programme. The US, South Korea and Japan would benefit from TMD deployments by South Korea and Japan, with South Korea in particular under direct missile threat.
