The civilized self and the barbaric other: Imperial delusions of order and the challenges of human security
Article Abstract:
The metaphor of the civilized self and the savage other in the context of the emerging concept of human security is explored and the notion that the global South is the cause and origin of contemporary global insecurity is questioned. It is contended that the North and South are mutually vulnerable, sharing a common destiny, which cannot be realized unless notions of a civilized self and a barbaric other are abandoned.
