The limits of UN diplomacy and the future of conflict mediation
Article Abstract:
A case study of the peacekeeping operations and the mediation efforts of the UN in Cambodia and former Yugoslavia brings out the important role of the UN in resolving international conflict despite its limitations. Clear direction, international support, consensus by member-states, and cooperation of the concerned parties are essential for the success of the UN in resolving conflicts. More realistic expectations from the UN and sufficient resource availability can improve the image of the UN as a conflict mediator.

The politics and ethics of military intervention
Article Abstract:
There is a strong need for military intervention in the volatile post-Cold War era. Intervention in domestic affairs has both ethical and political legitimacy in a democratic state threatened by turmoil, which may adversely affect regional or international security. In most cases, the UN Security Council should authorize intervention. There may be a conflict between the ethical and political feasibilities, which should be adequately resolved. A moral justification for the interventions is also necessary.
