Understanding 'political stability': party action and political discourse in West Bengal

Article Abstract:

This article provides a criticism of Atul Kohli's thesis 'Democracy and Discontent' in which he argues West Bengal has enjoyed political stability due to the Communist Party of India. The author argues that though the CPI has been repeatedly elected it has not allowed for the strong organization of other political parties as Kohli stated, but has used violence and exploited the weakness of other parties in an effort to be continually re-elected.
