America's left-wing intellectuals and the trade union movement 1945-1996
Article Abstract:
A rapprochement between the trade union movement and academia is taking place at the end of the 20th century, not merely a theoretical appreciation of the importance of the working class, but a sense that liberal, leftist academicians should look to the labor movement for mutual support, common dreams and political comradeship. The new AFL-CIO leadership, led by John Sweemeu. has started tearing down the curtain separating labor's official leadership from America's leftist intellectuals. With the Cold War over, the AFL-CIO has also drawn on ex-New Leftists for its ideas, and contemporary intellectuals have responded. A historical summary is included.

Unions in the Inland Empire: perceptions of change
Article Abstract:
A survey of the changes from the early 1980s to 1993 for labor unions in Southern California indicates that educational unions grew in strength while other unions had a period of difficulty. The growing population of Riverside and San Bernardino counties was specified as a affecting factor along with an anti-union atmosphere, technological change and the importing of goods. The main subjects of bargaining were wages, health insurance and work hours. The unions have responded to the changes by increasing leadership training, providing services to members, and cooperating with other unions and with the management.

Structural characteristics of the independent union in America revisited
Article Abstract:
Independent unions, those unaffiliated with the AFL-CIO, were made possible by the National Labor Relations Act of 1935. A study of independent unions was first published in the Labor Law Journal in Jul 1968 and in 1992 the study was repeated to determine how their membership and management have changed. Collective bargaining for public employees has added the American Nurses Assn and the National Education Assn to the list, while Physicians and Dentists and Professional Engineers reflect the changing attitudes of professionals towards unionization. The total number of independent unions more than doubled.
