Developing a demutualization acquisition strategy for private equity firms

Article Abstract:

Private equity firms should consider taking part in the consolidation of the life insurance industry by buying and demutualizing mutual life insurance companies. Because mutual insurers are not accountable to shareholders, they possess untapped opportunities to improve financial performance. Private equity firms should work with the mutual insurer's managers to demutualize, improve performance and acquire other insurers or financial institutions. Selection of the proper target and jurisdiction are important to minimizing the legal and regulatory obstacles that confront demutualization efforts.

Why firms cannot afford to maintain the mommy track

Article Abstract:

Law firms will have to change policies that have the effect of excluding women attorneys from positions of power because they must attract women attorneys to remain competitive in the marketplace. The changes must be gender-neutral in effect to avoid the stigmatization of attorneys that take advantage of options such as the mommy track. Law firms may consider task billing, providing day care and promoting part-time options. More fundamental, and more effective, change would result from shifting to a mixed-compensation model that eliminates the billable hour competition.

Equal justice for law firm partners

Article Abstract:

The Association of the Bar of the City of New York has conducted a study showing that African Americans are underrepresented in the partnership ranks of New York law firms. The committee responsible for the study also expressed concern about law firm unwillingness to consider skills and talents other than grades. Once minorities have been hired, diversity training may help all parties to feel more comfortable.
