Downsizing is often dangerous

Article Abstract:

Downsizing can do irreparable harm to large law firms. Despite its current popularity, the down side of downsizing is worth contemplating. Because law firms rely so heavily on human assets, downsizing affects a firm's capital and may leave it unprepared to handle new business in a professional manner. It also can lead to loss of employee morale and damage reputations. Furthermore, recent studies suggest that downsizing has only temporary economic benefits. Firms that downsize too much may lose business and be unable to recover it later on.

References a key to hiring

Article Abstract:

Many attorneys are not aware that reference checks can be used not only to check information given by a candidate for employment, but also to garner insight into how to manage candidates after they are part of the firm. A 'self-reference' during the interview is the best place to start, giving an idea of the candidate's frankness and self-knowledge and giving him or her the chance to anticipate negative references and explain them. The supervisor-to-be should call the references. Sample questions to ask a reference are listed.
