Exporters of eco-technology seek IP protection; the 1994 TRIPs Agreement offers global patentability for most environmental products
Article Abstract:
The interest in sustainable development is increasing as global per capita incomes rise and the environmental regulatory system of the US is becoming a model for the rest of the world. Ways to recoup the cost of researching and developing new environmental technology include a cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) or international patent protection. The Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), enacted in 1994, provides environmental technologies with additional patent protection. Companies using the agreement should take note of its timetable when developing their marketing plan.
