McVeigh's trial lean and trim; judge and prosecutors lauded, but defense gets mixed reviews
Article Abstract:
Experts agree that the trial of defendant Timothy McVeigh in the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing was a model of judicial efficiency, with no trial interruptions by evidence or discovery disputes and juror or lawyer misbehavior. Experts' only regret was that the trial should have been televised so that public could see an example of good judging and lawyering. Lead prosecutor Joseph Hartzler led a nine-member team with each prosecutor assigned an area of expertise, and US District Judge Richard Matsch presided. Defense lawyers garnered mixed reviews from the trial's start.

Placating heirs key to TCI deal; nasty T&E fight threatened CEO John Malone's control of cable giant's shares
Article Abstract:
The settlement of heirs' claims against Tele-Communications Inc founder Bob Magness's estate imposes substantial costs on shareholders but assures John Malone, the chairman and CEO of the firm, of control of the company for the rest of his life. The deal specifies payments by the firm of as much as $1bil to assure Malone's control, and this amounts to about one-seventh of 1996 revenues. The settlement amounted to about double what the company had originally stated it would pay in the 1997 deal Magness's sons filed suit to overturn.

Impact in absentia: at-large bombing suspect John Doe No. 2 to figure in trial
Article Abstract:
The Justice Department's search for the so-called John Doe No. 2 in the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing is still officially active, but some news accounts quoting anonymous federal officials state that they no longer believe two people to have been guilty of the bomb plot. Moreover, prosecutors have stated the well-known sketch of him is unreliable. Since defense lawyers can be counted on to invoke John Doe No. 2, however, he still causes problems for prosecutors, and he is not the only hurdle they face.
