Firms eschew expertise of consultants; lawyers have failed to exploit the advice of expert speakers in areas such as financial planning, stress, teamwork and creativity
Article Abstract:
The legal community has long rejected the expert speakers who have helped change corporate America's approach to business, but they have much to contribute to law firm practice. Many attorneys are skeptical because their profession has unique restrictions and pressures of which consultants may be unaware, and because they are trained not to trust laypeople. However, a greater understanding of team management and creativity, for example, would benefit almost any firm. Bar associations have a major role to play here.

Weak practice areas need bolstering
Article Abstract:
Law firms needing to improve their economic outlook should consider applying quantitative and qualitative analysis of problematic areas of practice. The quantitative review should: define economic expectations for the practice, assess whether these expectations are being met, and indicate more efficient methods. A qualitative review should client services, employee satisfaction and interaction between different areas of the firm.

Surveys can forge consensus; partners air their views
Article Abstract:
Partner audits are an efficient way of ascertaining law partners' views on various issues facing the firm. They are a good tool for participatory management and should be conducted on a regular basis. Steps for implementing an audit are outlined, and sample questions are provided.
