HSC "cannot cope" with new pressures caused by government spending cuts
Article Abstract:
Frank Davies, UK Health and Safety Commission (HSC) chair, will inform the Secretary of State for the Environment that the HSC will not be able to meet all of its statutory obligations, given planned budget cutbacks. The HSC, already planning to reduce its workforce by 20% by the year 2000, has sought additional funding for handling newly privatized industries, continuing deregulatory efforts in removing obsolete legislation, and checking on major hazard plants. Davies' comments will be submitted with the HSC's Public Expenditure Survey proposals.

Government drags feet with reluctant proposals for new working time laws
Article Abstract:
The UK government's proposals for implementing the EC Directive on work hours fall short of expectations and appear to be restricted in their applicability. The proposals, which will affect a quarter of Britain's employers and cost nearly two billion pounds, cover areas such as daily and weekly rest breaks and periods, annual leave, night work, and the maximum work week allowed. The UK government is reluctantly implementing the Directive in the hope of being excluded from it later through a voting basis change.

Council pays social worker 66,000 pounds sterling for work stress caused by "bullying" boss
Article Abstract:
Scottish social worker Janet Ballantyne received 66,000 pounds sterling in June 1996 from the South Lanankshire Council as compensation for job-related stress caused by her supervisor. Ballantyne retired for stress-induced medical reasons in 1993, following allegedly improper treatment by her boss. She claimed the council had failed to provide a safe work environment and protect her as an employee.
