New crime and punishment: Russia is fighting thugs and con artists with new laws. But is that enough?
Article Abstract:
Post-Communist criminal law in Russia is depoliticized and is designed to fight crimes against the individual and the state. The code briefly deals with Russia's two greatest criminal problems, official corruption and organized crime. It states that conspiracy theories are a way to charge criminal enterprises although practically, this will likely be superseded by presidential decrees. A weakness is that it fails to deal with domestic violence. The drafting of the code was done largely by Russians with input from western civil law experts.

The personal side of unemployment; when the American dream is denied
Article Abstract:
A lawyer laid off in June 1991 reflects on the unemployed condition and observes that this personal experience makes it easier to empathize with stories about the unemployed. He has tried without success all the usual methods such as networking, law school placement offices, classified ads and mentors. Sole practice is not economically feasible for a young lawyer burdened with law school loans.
