Companies don't know their OESs from their MELs but union reps know their limits
Article Abstract:
A survey of the companies using hazardous airborne substances indicates that many of the small firms are unaware of legislation about occupational exposure limits (OEL) and Maximum Exposure Limits(MEL). Even companies with good risk management policies relied on common sense rather than HSE's EH40 to judge the toxicity of substances. The HSE proposes to issue clarifying advice by improving communication and by providing further information of supplied chemicals through intermediaries. Trade union safety representatives showed a greater knowledge of OELs than company representatives.

New workplace fire Regulations in place
Article Abstract:
The Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 1997, which becomes effective Dec 1, 1997, ties UK laws with the EC's directives on workplace safety by making employers and those in control of workplaces responsible for fire safety. The local fire authority will be responsible for enforcing the regulations through civil sanctions. This has helped reduce the cost of implementation 30 mil pound sterling. A list of workplaces exempted from the Regulations are included.
