One chief justice's political gumbo; add big business, mix in law school clinics to make re-election bid brouhaha

Article Abstract:

Louisiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Pascal Calogero created controversy in his re-election bid, clamping down on Tulane Law School's Environmental Law Clinic to gain favor with big business, but shortly after being re-elected he told the press the court might rethink amendments made to Rule XX governing clinics. The clinics cannot accept clients above the federal poverty level used by the Legal Services Corp and can represent a citizens' group only if 51% of its members meet poverty rules.

Rankled by the rankings

Article Abstract:

U.S. News and World Report will come out with its eighth annual ranking of US law schools in 1998, and the legal education community has both stepped up its campaign against these rankings and tried to land as high on the list as possible. Objections include that the survey's reliance on Law Schools Admissions Test scores and undergraduate grade-point averages has increased the schools' concern about them and hurt minority enrollment.
