Policing stress
Article Abstract:
Police officers' stress levels can be managed by encouraging officers to adopt more fulfilling lifestyles, according to the head of the occupational health unit of the West Yorkshire, UK, police department. Dr Chris Shinn believes in the effort syndrome theory, which holds that stress is related to physical exhaustion and can best be treated by periods of rest. Officers' stresses, which are compounded by the macho culture of police work, can include paperwork, weak management skills, public attitudes, personal conflicts, lack of job autonomy, and disrupted home lives.

"Blind eye" to private vehicle use costs Royal Mail 30,000 pounds sterling and postman's life
Article Abstract:
A UK court assessed Royal Mail 30,000 pounds sterling for failing to control postal workers' use of private vehicles, a lapse directly related to the death of a postal worker in Oct 1995. Despite union complaints, Royal Mail's policy had been to allow workers to use their own vehicles to travel to their delivery rounds. Royal Mail failed to carry out the necessary risk assessments and had no formal policy or regulations governing this area.
