Swapping bond investments to reduce capital gains - an illustration
Article Abstract:
Swapping bond investments can create a capital loss in the current tax year while deferring capital gains until the bond matures. However, financial advisers should carefully explain the process to their clients because they must avoid a 'wash sale' where a bond is swapped for an almost identical one to generate a loss which would be disallowed by the IRS. Transaction costs must also be considered because the savings must exceed those costs.
