Preserving the rule of law in Hong Kong after July 1, 1997: a report of a mission of inquiry
Article Abstract:
The maintenance and expansion of the rule of law, judicial independence and civil liberties in Hong Kong is a matter of international importance, both because of the economic importance of Hong Kong and the implications of China's behavior for Macau and Taiwan. Hong Kong has become more politically aware, and opinions regarding reintegration with China fall into two camps. Some favor a conciliatory and trusting approach to China, and others favor confronting China and debating tensions. The open, confrontational approach ultimately will better protect the rule of law in Hong Kong.

Commercial arbitration in Hong Kong and China: a comparative analysis
Article Abstract:
Comparison of recent commercial arbitration laws and rules in Hong Kong and China suggests that the two regimes will be compatible because they have both converged toward international standards established by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law. Hong Kong departed from English common law precedents beginning in 1982. China adopted revised laws based on the international model beginning in 1989. The primary issue that is still to be resolved is how Hong Kong awards will be treated in China and how Chinese awards will be treated in Hong Kong.
