Prison privatisation and the remand population: principle versus pragmatism?
Article Abstract:
Privatization of prisons in the United Kingdom has failed to achieve the goals established in the shift from public to contracted management. Problems such as remand populations and deteriorating conditions have persisted despite private management, causing privatization to revert to public institution practices. This signals a convergence of status in the treatment of all prisoners versus the unique legal status of remand prisoners, and the continued decline in conditions.

Prison privateers: neo-colonialists in NSW
Article Abstract:
The increasing use in New South Wales of US-managed for-profit prisons is reflective of a larger neo-colonialism of the country by the American 'business democracy.' Just as US-based styles of nuclear power production, health care and chemical corporations have come to dominate Australian approaches to these industries, the US notion of private prisons is taking root. The problem needs to be addressed quickly.

Gender and prison organisation: some comments on masculinities and prison management
Article Abstract:
The hierarchical society among prison inmates generates prisoner identities that are based on contestation and negotiation rather than 'a priori' designations of fixed or gendered identifications. Struggle is the primary method for obtaining identity, and usually occurs in specific locales for demonstrative ends. Both male and female prisoners utilize this process to determine hierarchy.
