Privilege an obstacle in Groom Lake suit: government refuses even to name secret air base in litigation over pollution
Article Abstract:
The govt has fiercely resisted a lawsuit brought by law professor Jonathan Turley over the military's highly secret Groom Lake test facility in NV. Turley brought charges under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, accusing the govt of illegally disposing of hazardous materials there by dumping them in open trenches and burning them with jet fuel. He sought to force a cleanup and to win damages on behalf of civilian plaintiffs who claim they were injured by working downwind from the disposal site.

Packing heat; the sign of the future may be 'please check your gun at the door.'
Article Abstract:
Six states in 1996 passed laws liberalizing carrying concealed weapons, bringing the total with liberalized gun policies to 31, with an additional 12 states allowing law enforcement authorities the discretion to grant licenses. Called shall-issue laws, these laws generally restrict gun owners from carrying their guns into such areas as prisons, police stations, courtrooms, schools and meetings of governmental bodies. Concerns include workplace violence and employer liability for such violence.

The price of vengeance; U.S. feels heat for ruling that permits government kidnapping
Article Abstract:
Governments throughout the world have expressed dismay at the Supreme Court's ruling in United States v. Alvarez-Machain, which found that a United States-Mexico extradition treaty did not bar government agents from kidnapping Mexican nationals on Mexican soil and taking them back to the US for criminal trial. In Aug 1992, the Organization of American States stated that the ruling ignores the basic international law tenet of territorial sovereignty.
