Rail deals focus on 3%, as strikes hit network
Article Abstract:
Pay awards in the UK rail industry are averaging 3% in 1996. Unions, seeking higher pay for increased productivity, have organized strikes disrupting much of the industry. The unions believe management is unfairly attempting to cap wages among the privatized subsidiaries. The industry's turmoil underscores the difficulties in privatizing Great Britain's railroads. Pay and merit awards for management personnel are also discussed.
