Prevalence of hypercholesterolemia in a maritime population
Article Abstract:
Many research studies have linked elevated levels of total blood cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol to an increased risk for coronary heart disease (CHD). Conversely, reduction of high cholesterol levels has been shown to lower the rate of CHD. Because of increasing concern about hypercholesterolemia (high blood cholesterol) among the medical community and the public, the National Cholesterol Education Program was developed. This program classifies total cholesterol of 200 to 239 mg/dL as borderline high, and total cholesterol of 240 mg/dL and over as high, for all adults regardless of age. A study was conducted in a population of 567 maritime personnel who spent six to nine months of the year at sea with limited options for diet and exercise. This group was of interest because their shipboard diet and lifestyle were more regular and controlled compared with the general population. Using the above National Cholesterol Education Program classifications, it was found that 33 percent of the ship personnel had borderline high total cholesterol, and another 28 percent had high levels. This translates into 64 percent of the men and 33 percent of the women (aged 20 to 67 years) having either borderline high or high cholesterol, and was considered cause for concern. Total cholesterol was also found to increase with age. Ship personnel may be an important population to study further because dietary modifications can be made for the entire crew and compliance would be assured while on board ship. For the same reasons, maritime personnel are unable to control their own diets, even if they do not consider the food served to be healthy. Reframing the debate between agency and stakeholder theories of the firm
Article Abstract:
The agency theory was deconstructed and analyzed. The analysis yielded several arguments for the theory. First, the recognition of stakeholders must be included by the agency theory. Second, a moral framework must be upheld above the interests of any shareholders. Third, contradictory assumptions about human nature are also included. These give rise to valid assumptions of honesty, loyalty and trust. The theory was then subjected to empirical hypotheses which led to the finding that stakeholder theory is the conclusion of agency theory.
