Rutgers investment in women reaps big dividends in the 1990s
Article Abstract:
The State University of New Jersey School of Law, Camden and S.I. Newhouse Center for Law and Justice, Newark, has been a leader in the training of women attorneys since 1972, boasting 50% female enrollment when their Ivy League rivals could barely claim 10%. Three of the attorneys in the National Law Journal's survey of the 50 top women attorneys are alumnae from Rutgers classes of the 1970. Two are law professors, Amelia H. Boss from the Temple University School of Law and Elizabeth Warren from Harvard. Cristina C. Arguedas is a criminal defense lawyer.

Don't bank on it; thinking of leaving law for the investment world? Learn from those who switched and returned
Article Abstract:
Many of the lawyers who have accepted positions in investment banks during the merger boom of the 1980s have returned to the law and have advice for colleagues interested in changing careers. The right skills, for working with numbers and quantitative analysis, are important, as is skill at selling. Changing careers as a young person is helpful, as those who have practiced law only briefly tend to be the most successful. Younger lawyers also have less to unlearn when they change careers.

Markets' madness to affect billables; IPO work may slow; mergers, takeovers spike
Article Abstract:
US mergers-and-acquisitions lawyers foresee a delay or even a brief halt in initial public offerings should the 1998 volatility on Wall Street lead to a long downturn in financial markets. However, more hostile takeover bids and money-based mergers could also be the result. According to these lawyers, the market turmoil has not yet affected negatively those deals which were already in process, unless they were leveraged buyouts relying on high-yield financing.
