Sex harassment laws create new barriers
Article Abstract:
Executives in legal and personnel departments increasingly say fear of lawsuits for sex harassment or discrimination leads employees to create homogenous work groups or otherwise exclude 'others.' Changing standards and rapidly rising penalties for once-accepted behavior complicate this problem. To counter it, employers should actively create and promote diversity within groups, swiftly counter both subtle and overt retaliation, emphasize mentoring individuals and building strong teams, and reward professionalism and effectiveness.

As participating loan arrangements gain in popularity, both their originators and participants must be aware of potential conflicts these relationships can create
Article Abstract:
Increased real-estate lending following several years of extensive workouts and restructurings has left many lenders relying on participation with an originating lender, rather than making direct loans of their own. These transactions can give rise to several common disputes, often over whether a participant was duped by the lead's failure to disclose material information on the borrower. Other problems involve conflicting clauses in a contract, and are generally resolved in favor of the lead.

Interbranch banking regs create burden
Article Abstract:
The rules of bank transactions between US branches and those in foreign countries are not likely to change soon. Current law doesn't recognize any difference between these interbranch transactions and normal ones, even when exchange rates cause an inherent loss on the transaction. Foreign banks are subject to similar conditions, since some transactions they make between US and home nation branches are subject to US tax.
