Strategic directions for North American industrial relations academic units: the Laval experience
Article Abstract:
Academic industrial relations has changed due to such factors as a change in the labor market and demographic changes. Universities have felt financial pressure which has played a part as well. Some IR programs have been discontinued and changes in those remaining have included more focus on client needs, pedagogical reforms aimed at giving students clinical skills, an emphasis on continuing education and concern with developing international connections. The example used is the Industrial Relations Dept at Laval University in Quebec, Canada.

Some principles of economics for human resource management
Article Abstract:
Courses in human resources management are most effective if they take an economic approach as this will teach students about the incentives created by the wage and benefit system. Students should learn to use economic tools on real-life problems and see how personnel decisions affect the bottom line. A sample course from North Carolina State University is detailed.
