Supported bail for mentally vulnerable defendants
Article Abstract:
Psychiatric bail provisions in court cases for mentally handicapped defendants may offer an effective means of directing the defendants away from the criminal custody and towards the psychiatric services they need. A psychiatric bail provision, as supported by the UK's Department of Health/Home Office, within the court system can facilitate the magistrate's decisions. The provision can also enhance cooperation between psychiatric and probation services departments.

Article Abstract:
A study of differences in the use of bail by South Wales magistrates' courts found that the culture of various courts affects the practices of bail use. Television licence evasion and the criminalisation of female poverty
Article Abstract:
The criminal justice system unfairly focuses on poor females in their prosecution of television licence evasion. In 1994 over 50% of criminal convictions of women concerned television licence fees. The disproportionate number of women convicted of the crime offers broad implications as to the treatment of female poverty by the UK justice system.
