The Art of Using Forecasts Effectively
Article Abstract:
Users of forecasts are frustrated by the apparent gap that frequently develops between fact and the forecast. Management then begins to distrust the usage of forecast as decision-making tools. Forecasting is beneficial when used in planning and also in reducing the role of risk. Strategic business planning also relies strongly on forecasts in assessing growth. It is necessary to differentiate, in defining forecasts, between a plan and extrapolation of history. Accurate forecasts are composed of an evaluation of current events weighed against business experience and judgment. Lack of knowledge of forecast methods can be of serious consequence to business.
