The deals
Article Abstract:
A UK survey of passenger bus company employees' salaries indicates pay increases averaged 3% in 1996 and that over 50% of the employees are eligible for profit-related compensation. However, some companies have stopped the use of such plans due to low margins. While pay postponements are reported, wage freezes have declined. Union bargaining has become decentralized, so the largest employee union is pushing the notion of a national standard of minimum common work conditions.

2.9% pay awards on the buses
Article Abstract:
Median pay increases in the bus and coach industry increased to 2.9% during 1995, as pay freezes became rarer, and profit-related pay schemes doubled. Wage negotiations were generally conducted locally, with most settlements below the inflation rate. A significant number of awards were lower than the previous year. Bus company owners, in a concentrated industry, increasingly relied on profit-related pay as the primary way of rewarding employees.

The key players
Article Abstract:
Pay deals within the UK bus industry are undergoing an evolution. The main union TGWU is pushing an agenda of minimum conditions, including a national minimum wage, improved safety policies, and minimum standards for pensions and other areas. Profit-related pay and devolved pay bargaining are favored by Stagecoach, the rapidly expanding industry leader. Stagecoach's ESOP is also discussed.
