The private sector in perspective - 1994/95
Article Abstract:
UK private sector pay levels began to rise slightly beginning in July 1995, following a six month period in which pay awards remained at 3%. Statistics gathered from 13 economic sectors such as the chemical, construction, engineering, hotel, paper, textile, retail, utilities, finance, general services, food, transportation, and manufacturing industries indicate pay settlements generally averaging 3% for the year. The finance industry averaged 4%, but these raises were often provided through bonuses. Industries such as construction struggled to keep up with inflation.

Review body rises accepted but not funded
Article Abstract:
The recommendations of five independent review bodies have been accepted by the central government and this will affect 1.3 mil public sector employees. However, the government has emphasized that there will be no central funds and that the funding should come from local employers. The report for nursing staff pay's recommendation that local negotiations should supplement the 1% national award is a first in review body history. The details of recommendations for various groups such as armed forces, doctors and dentists are discussed.

Pay awards move up from 3% plateau
Article Abstract:
UK pay settlements, having moved upward from their 3% plateau in Sept 1995, will likely climb higher during the 1995 fall season, perhaps moving to a new plateau around 3.5% by Dec 1995. While not representing a pay explosion during 1995, the upward trend means employees can realistically expect larger pay increases over the 12 months beginning in Sept 1995. The manufacturing sector is likely to set the pace for movement to a higher pay average plateau.
