The trials and tribulations of taking depositions in foreign countries: Japan, a case study
Article Abstract:
Taking depositions in foreign countries for US trials can be a burdensome and expensive process, especially if the country in which evidence is sought has not signed the Hague Evidence Convention. Violating any bilateral rules between the US and the other country could result in any settlement or verdict not being enforced by the other country's courts. The case of Japan, which has not signed the Hague Evidence Convention, is discussed.

Federal farewell
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom should seek to gain an international trade agreement with the European Union without the current political ties, says economics professor Patrick Minford of Liverpool University. Minford believes that Britain should threaten to stop Europe from uniting, by using its current powers under the Treaty of Rome, if Europe does not agree to the proposed arrangement. Britain should leave the union if necessary, says Minford.

Cinderella in the bruised flesh
Article Abstract:
Research in the US has shown that stepchildren are far more likely to be abused than genetic children. Children are more likely to be abused when their mothers are very young, they come from large, poor families and they have a stepparent. Inclination towards abuse may be averted in stepfamilies by a need to be seen as kind and generous, and a network of obligations to the genetic parent of the child.
