Lawyer steps us as voice of the Left; N.Y.'s Alfred Ross keeps tabs on the Federalists and other conservative groups
Article Abstract:
Alfred Ross set up the Center for Democracy Studies in 1996 to counter what he calls a well-funded and organized political campaign of right-wing groups to implement anti-democratic values in US society. Ross and his organization closely monitor the activities of those deemed to be right-wing. Ross obtained his first experience with the civil-rights movement, then became an expert on the history of religious and conservative advocacy groups.

Community task forces harvest social change; Appleseed develops projects that match pro bono expertise with a community's needs
Article Abstract:
The Appleseed Foundation, a coalition of 14 local public interest centers launched by Ralph Nader in 1993, looks for system-wide problems and can mobilize a powerful network to solve them. One case was a project on behalf of teachers, firefighters and police in the District of Columbia. Their pension fund was billions of dollars short and Appleseed mobilized tax and pensions law experts to work on a solution.
