The technology of library service provision: a cost function analysis of public library systems in the United Kingdom
Article Abstract:
A study investigated the role of public library systems as multi-product, multi-activity enterprises that furnish lending services across a spectrum of media and serve as information centers for the public it serves. A general function for library operating costs was estimated based on data from UK public library system. The estimates derived imply that the cost function is not homothetic and, therefore, the attributes of library technology are local properties of the cost function and are thus not easily summarized.
