The main event
Article Abstract:
Multimedia is the newest buzzword in the computer industry, but what it really comes down to is the ability to combine the audiovisual impact of television with the power of a computer to create effective, interactive presentations. With the help of CD-ROM disks, audio compact disks, scanners, laser videodiscs and write-once, read-many optical disks, users can create animated presentations for a fraction of the cost of paying a production company. The hardware necessary for multimedia is not cheap, from $10,000 to $20,000, but compared with the $2,000 to $4,000 per finished minute charged by computer animators, multimedia can pay for itself quickly. Of the three main multimedia desktop systems, the IBM PC, the Macintosh and the Commodore Amiga, the Amiga is better suited to multimedia than the others because of its special sound and graphics coprocessors and its cheap hardware and software.
