Quantifying HIV
Article Abstract:
Measuring HIV RNA may be a useful way of determining whether a pregnant HIV-infected woman will pass the infection on to her infant. A 1996 study found that pregnant HIV-infected women with 20,000 HIV RNA copies per milliliter (ml) of blood or less were unlikely to transmit the virus to their infant while those with 50,000 copies/ml or more were very likely to transmit the virus. However, some researchers have not been able to duplicate these results and others have found different thresholds for transmission. The study also found that zidovudine treatment could lower HIV RNA levels. Measurement of HIV RNA could be used to monitor the effectiveness of drug treatment before symptoms become severe. Three commercial tests for HIV RNA are nearing FDA approval, but the reliability of the tests will still have to be established.

Domestic frontier romance, or, how the sentimental heroine became white
Article Abstract:
The heart of frontier romance fiction is neither a genteel nor a marriageable masculine hero who flees the settlement for the freedom of the virgin wilderness. Literary critical tradition has long segregated male frontier romance against female domestic fiction. Yet the latter concern themselves with Anglo-Indian warfare and the issue of how one conducts courtship under such conditions. It is argued that women's and men's frontier romances both shared an essentially similar racial ideology and worked together to produce it.
