The manner in which Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and Harriet Jacobs's "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" argue against 19th-century family ideology is examined, focusing on the manner in which Stowe uses Creole family dynamics and Jacobs portrays her marginal status in a settler colony.
