Impulse or genre or neither?
Article Abstract:
Critics of dystopian literature frequently ignore the fact that analysis of this genre is always included in studies of utopian literature. Dystopian literature deals with extrapolations of dysfunctions occuring in present societies and thus acts as a strong form of social criticism. The genre includes those books which show a society that has failed in its ideals and perpetuates oppression. However, critics cannot assign this to a particular genre since the genre of science fiction already encompasses all these concerns.

Phallic mothers and monster queers
Article Abstract:
Essays by Barry Keith Grant and Harry M. Benshoff depict horror and monsters. Grant's 'The Dread of Difference: Gender and the Horror Film,' is a collection of sixteen reprinted essays which is divided into three parts. Critics suggest that the collection do not show solid ideas and are sometimes repetitive. Benshoff's 'Monster in the Closet: Homosexuality and the Horror Film,' on the other hand is well-prepared literary work which depicts gay and lesbian form of monstrosity.

Is something new happening in science fiction?
Article Abstract:
The works of new science fiction (sf) writers are believed to be different from past sf works. However, critics say that new sf writers do their works out of self-expression. Literary works such as Ian R. MacLeod's 'The Great Wheel,' Kage Baker's 'In the Garden of Iden' and Marek Huberath's 'Don's Three Women' are some of the new sf works which express science fiction in a different way and are believed to have realized the dream of most science fiction writers.
