Murder records remain secret after 28 years
Article Abstract:
The Washington Supreme Court in Newman v. King County denied a reporter access to police records involving an open case of a civil rights leader who was murdered in 1969. The state Public Records Act provides exemptions from disclosure for information essential to law enforcement. The Court stated the provision's broad language is meant to ensure effective law enforcement and applied to the case, which was still officially active. The dissenting judges stated the provision should be narrowly construed.

Hospitals do not have to disclose internal report on infection rates
Article Abstract:
The Iowa Supreme Court ruled that the University of Iowa Hospital did not have to reveal internal reports on infections that are contracted in the clinic and hospital under the Iowa code involving morbidity and mortality studies. A prospective patient requested the reports under the Open Records Act before she received surgery at the hospital. The Court supported the hospital's position requiring confidentiality to encourage voluntary reporting of in-house infection rates by hospital staff.
