New year brings FoIA changes, but will they help journalists?
Article Abstract:
The Electronic Freedom of Information Act, which brings major new amendments to the Freedom of Information Act, takes effect in 1997. This should be good news for journalists because it makes records kept by a federal agency in computerized or electronic formats readily accessible. Moreover, it requires agencies to issue information which was provided to past requesters when receiving a current request. However, these changes will be for naught if entrenched attitudes among federal employees are not changed, meaning they will always find an excuse for not releasing requested information.

Journalists and conspiracy papers: lessons from the Casolaro papers
Article Abstract:
The death of journalist Danny Casolaro has created a need for investigative journalists to re-examine their roles when pursuing conspiracy theories. Stories which invlolve high-level conspiracies are often difficult to pursue and publish since most of the information acquired are of a second hand or unverified nature. Journalists should learn to properly define the extent of their involvement when dealing with conspiracy theories.
