No disease is considered to be threatening, if the health of modern political and ethical culture rests, nominally or actually, on the successful exchange of morality law as the source of legitimation and mechanism of arbitration. The body in which this "disease" takes hold is not the sort of body- or rather, person- that law and justice have produced themselves, and is therefore able to sentence and judge.

Article Abstract:
A handful of Dust brings to the fore the tension between Waugh's implicitly reformative, conservative impulse and his subversive and thoroughly modern enjoyment of the aesthetic possibilities of cruelty. It is argued by Waugh that this novel pushes his satire to such limits that it must take another form.
