Questions about charity held not libelous
Article Abstract:
The US Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit affirmed a district court dismissal of the Chapin v. Knight-Ridder case for failure to show actionable defamation. This was a libel case based on a Philadelphia Inquirer article on the accountability of Help Hospitalized Veterans, a charitable program for US soldiers hospitalized in Saudi Arabia. The district court observed that the article had no factual statements which could be read as true or false or implying a defamatory meaning. The appellate court felt that the one statement which might be defamatory was covered by the 'fair reporting' privilege.

Court wrongly prohibited libelous speech
Article Abstract:
The US Court of Appeals for the 3d Circuit has ruled that exceptional remedies other than money damages are not recognized in Pennsylvania for libel. Richard Thompson was injoined by both the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and the federal district court in Pennsylvania from making libelous statements against his former attorney Steven Kramer. Thompson argued that such injunction was an unconstitutional prior restraint on his freedom of speech, and the 3d Circuit agreed that the injunction was not a legal remedy under Pennsylvania law.

Speculation about police pickets held to be opinion, not libelous
Article Abstract:
The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled in Lyons v. Globe Newspaper that stories suggesting conspiracy behind the disruption of the Massachusetts Democratic convention in 1990 were expressions of opinion protected by the First Amendment and not libel. The story suggested that demonstrations might have been orchestrated by Kenneth Lyons, chief of the National Assn of Government Employees, with the idea that his favorite candidate for governor might have been placed on the ballot had the convention been canceled.
