Student election vote tallies exempt from disclosure as 'scholastic records.'(Virginia)
Article Abstract:
The Virginia Supreme Court ruled in Wall v. Fairfax County School Board that election results from student government elections at a public high school were exempt from the state's Freedom of Information Act as scholastic records. The plaintiff, editor of the school newspaper, argued that election results were official records and that the scholastic records exemption only covered grades, test scores and disciplinary records. The Court did not address whether the election results were official records and simply found that records regarding individual students were scholastic records.

Law exempting privatized hospitals from sunshine overturned
Article Abstract:
The Florida Supreme Court ruled in Halifax Hospital Medical Center v. News-Journal Corp. in Jan 1999 that a public hospital being privatized cannot close meetings of its governing board to the public. Halifax Hospital Medical Center in Daytona Beach, FL had sought to exclude reporters from the city's News-Journal newspaper based on an exemption to the state's sunshine law. The Court found the exemption too broad to be acceptable under the state constitution.
